Last month, someone in your town typed this into ChatGPT: “who’s the best plumber near me for a water heater replacement?” ChatGPT named three companies. Yours wasn’t one of them. The person called company number one. You never knew any of this happened.

That’s the part that should worry you. Google shows you where you rank. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity don’t — they just answer, and your business is either in the answer or it isn’t. Winning at ChatGPT for business isn’t a futuristic SEO hobby anymore. For local service businesses, it’s becoming the front door.

I’m going to show you exactly how AI search decides which businesses to recommend, and the six-step playbook we’d run for any plumber, roofer, dentist, or contractor who hired us for this. No hype. Just the mechanics.

Why ChatGPT Doesn’t Know Your Business Exists

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: ChatGPT doesn’t browse your website the way Google does. When someone asks for a local recommendation, the AI pulls from its training data plus whatever real-time sources it can verify — and it cross-references ruthlessly. If your business shows up consistently across trusted sources with clear, structured information, you get recommended. If your details are thin, contradictory, or scattered, you get skipped without a word.

Think about it from the AI’s perspective. It’s staking its credibility on every recommendation. It won’t name a business it can’t verify three ways. Your job is to make verification effortless.

The businesses winning AI recommendations right now aren’t doing anything exotic. They’re doing the boring fundamentals so well that every system — Google, ChatGPT, Apple Maps, Yelp — agrees on who they are, what they do, and why they’re good. That agreement is the whole game.

ChatGPT for Business: The 6-Step Recommendation Playbook

Being recommended by AI starts with being clearly the best answer.

Step 1: Fix your Google Business Profile like your revenue depends on it

Because it does. Your Google Business Profile is the single most-cited source AI systems use for local businesses. And most profiles I audit are embarrassing: wrong hours, three blurry photos from 2019, no services listed, unanswered reviews.

Fill every field. Every service you offer, with descriptions. Real photos — your trucks, your team, your actual work, not stock images. Your exact service area. Holiday hours. And turn on messaging if you can respond within a few hours; responsiveness is a signal.

This alone puts you ahead of maybe 70% of local competitors. I’m not exaggerating. Most contractors set up their profile once and never touch it again.

Step 2: Become the most-reviewed business in your category

When ChatGPT recommends a plumber, it almost always mentions ratings: “highly rated,” “4.8 stars,” “dozens of positive reviews.” Reviews are the AI’s shortcut for trust, because it can’t visit your shop.

You don’t need a thousand reviews. You need more recent, detailed reviews than the three competitors around you. Fifty thoughtful reviews beat five hundred stale ones. And the text matters — when customers mention specific services (“water heater install,” “emergency drain repair”), those phrases become part of how AI systems describe and categorize you.

Build a review request into every finished job. Text the customer a direct link the same day the work is done — not a week later, not “when you get a chance.” Same-day asks convert at dramatically higher rates. Respond to every review, including the bad ones, like a professional. AI systems read your responses too, and a thoughtful reply to a complaint reads as accountability.

Step 3: Make your citations boring and identical everywhere

Your business name, address, and phone number must be character-for-character identical across every directory that matters: Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, Angi, HomeAdvisor, BBB, and your industry-specific directories. “ABC Plumbing LLC” on one site and “ABC Plumbing” on another is a discrepancy, and discrepancies cost you.

This is tedious work. It’s also exactly the kind of work most businesses never do, which is why it works. Audit yours with a free citation checker, fix the mismatches, and kill duplicate listings. One afternoon of cleanup here pays dividends for years.

Step 4: Add schema markup that spoon-feeds the machines

Schema is structured data on your website that tells AI systems exactly what they’re looking at: this is a plumbing business, here are the services, here’s the service area, here are the reviews, here’s the phone number. Without it, the AI has to guess from your page copy. With it, there’s nothing to guess.

At minimum, your site needs LocalBusiness schema (or the specific type: Plumber, Dentist, Electrician), with your services, area served, hours, and aggregate rating marked up. Add FAQ schema to your service pages while you’re at it — AI systems love pulling direct answers from FAQ markup, and it doubles as featured-snippet bait on Google.

If your site was built more than a couple of years ago, there’s a good chance it has no schema at all. This is a quick win — a developer can add it in an afternoon, and it’s one of the highest-ROI technical fixes in local search right now.

Step 5: Publish content that answers the questions people actually ask AI

Here’s where most local businesses leave money on the table. People ask AI assistants very specific questions: “how much does a water heater replacement cost in Austin,” “is a tankless water heater worth it for a family of five,” “what’s the difference between a repair and a repipe.”

Every one of those questions is a page on your website waiting to happen. Not keyword-stuffed garbage — genuine, specific answers written from real experience. When your page is the clearest answer on the internet to a question, AI systems cite it. I’ve watched this happen: a well-written cost guide starts showing up as the cited source in AI answers within months.

Write for the questions your customers ask on the phone. You already know what they are. Ten detailed service-area pages will do more for your AI visibility than any trick.

Step 6: Test it yourself, monthly

This is the step nobody does, and it’s free. Once a month, open ChatGPT and ask the questions your customers ask: “best roofer in [your town],” “emergency plumber near me open now,” “how much does [your service] cost.” See who gets recommended and why. Then ask a follow-up: “why did you recommend them?” The AI will often tell you its reasoning — more reviews, better ratings, clearer service info. That’s your to-do list, straight from the source.

Do the same on Gemini and Perplexity. They weigh sources differently, and you want to show up everywhere, not just one system.

What Doesn’t Work (Save Your Money)

A few things being sold right now that I’d skip. “AI SEO” tools that promise to get you into ChatGPT answers by submitting your site to some database — ChatGPT doesn’t work that way; there’s no submission form. Paying for placement in AI answers — that’s not a thing, and anyone selling it is selling air. And generic “GEO audits” that are just a PDF of things you could read on a blog — if the audit doesn’t end with specific changes to your profiles, schema, and content, it’s theater.

The playbook above is unglamorous. That’s precisely why it works while your competitors chase shortcuts.

How Long Does This Take?

Honest answer: the profile fixes, citation cleanup, and schema can be done in two to three weeks. Reviews compound over months — you can’t shortcut trust. Content takes the longest to pay off, typically three to six months before your pages start getting cited regularly.

But here’s what I tell every local business owner: you don’t need to be perfect. You need to be better than the five competitors around you. In most local markets, the bar is shockingly low. A business that does steps one through four properly is already ahead of 90% of its market. Steps five and six are how you stay ahead.

One more thing worth saying: this doesn’t replace traditional SEO. Google still drives the majority of local search traffic, and everything in this playbook helps your Google rankings too. Reviews, citations, schema, content — Google rewards all of it. You’re not choosing between Google and AI search. You’re building one foundation that serves both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT doesn’t offer paid placement in its answers, and any service claiming to sell it is misleading you. Recommendations come from the AI’s assessment of trustworthy, verifiable information across the web — reviews, business profiles, citations, and cited content. The playbook in this guide is the legitimate path: make your business easy to verify and hard to ignore.

Does my website need to mention AI or ChatGPT to get recommended?

No — and please don’t. Stuffing “ChatGPT recommended” badges or AI keywords onto your site looks desperate and does nothing. AI systems recommend businesses based on verifiable trust signals (reviews, consistent business info, authoritative content), not on whether your site flatters the AI. Focus on being genuinely the best-documented business in your market.

How is GEO different from regular SEO?

Traditional SEO optimizes for ranked lists of links — position 1, 2, 3 on Google. GEO (generative engine optimization) optimizes for being named and cited inside AI-generated answers, where there is no “position 2” — you’re either in the answer or invisible. The good news: about 80% of the work overlaps. Reviews, citations, schema, and authoritative content help both. GEO just adds AI-specific testing and citation-focused content on top.

How do I know if ChatGPT is already recommending my competitors?

Test it directly. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity the questions your customers would ask — “best [your trade] in [your town]” — and see who comes up. Ask follow-ups like “why did you recommend them?” to learn the reasoning. Do this monthly and track it like you’d track rankings. If competitors appear and you don’t, the gap is usually reviews, profile completeness, or cited content — all fixable.

What to Do Next

Start with step six, actually. Go test ChatGPT for business yourself — ask about your trade in your town right now and see where you stand. That two-minute test will tell you more about your urgency than anything I could write.

Then, if you want this done properly — profile optimization, citation cleanup, schema implementation, and the content engine that gets you cited — that’s what our free audit is for. We’ve run local search playbooks for 700+ brands, and AI search visibility is now baked into everything we do. We’ll show you exactly where you stand against your competitors and what it’ll take to get recommended.
