“How much does a website cost?” is the most asked and most badly answered question in our industry. The honest answer is also the most frustrating one: it depends. But “it depends” is not useful, so let me give you something better. Think of this guide as your web design cost calculator. By the end, you will be able to estimate your project within a realistic range and, more importantly, understand exactly what drives the price up or down.

I have quoted hundreds of web design projects. The pattern is always the same. Two businesses ask for “a website” and receive quotes of $2,000 and $25,000, and both quotes can be completely fair. The difference is scope, and most buyers have no framework for judging it. This guide is that framework.

How to use this web design cost calculator

Forget the online calculators that ask three questions and spit out a number. Real pricing comes from five variables. Work through them in order and you will land on a number you can trust.

1. What type of business are you? A local service business needs a fast, trustworthy lead machine. An e-commerce store needs product infrastructure, checkout, and integrations. A B2B company needs content depth and conversion architecture. A startup needs speed and flexibility. Each type has a different baseline.

2. How many pages and what kind? Five service pages is a different project than fifty product pages with filtering. Content volume is the single biggest cost driver most buyers underestimate.

3. Custom design or template-based? A customized premium theme costs a fraction of a from-scratch design. Both are legitimate. They are just different products.

4. What functionality do you need? Booking systems, membership areas, custom calculators, multi-language, CRM integrations. Every functional requirement adds development hours.

5. Who writes the content? Professional copywriting is often 20 to 30 percent of a quality project. If you write it yourself, budget drops, but so does conversion quality unless you are a strong writer.

Using a web design cost calculator

Web design cost by business type: the 2026 tiers

Here are honest ranges based on what competent providers actually charge. Anyone dramatically below these ranges is cutting something you will miss later.

Local service business (plumber, dentist, law firm)

Budget tier: $2,000 to $5,000. Template-based or lightly customized design, 5 to 10 pages, click-to-call, review integration, local SEO foundations. This is the sweet spot for most local businesses. You do not need a $20,000 site to dominate local search. You need speed, trust signals, and frictionless contact.

Premium tier: $5,000 to $12,000. Custom design, dedicated location pages, advanced local SEO, booking integration, professional copywriting. Worth it when your average job value is high. A law firm landing one extra case a month pays for the premium tier in weeks.

E-commerce store

Budget tier: $3,000 to $8,000. Shopify or WooCommerce setup with a customized theme, up to 50 products, standard payment and shipping. Fine for testing a concept or running a simple catalog.

Growth tier: $8,000 to $25,000. Custom design, conversion-optimized product pages, advanced filtering, email capture flows, upsells, proper analytics. This is where stores start behaving like sales channels instead of catalogs. If you are serious about e-commerce revenue, this is your real starting point.

Scale tier: $25,000+. Custom or headless builds, complex integrations, subscription logic, multi-region. Only justified by serious existing revenue.

B2B / corporate website

Standard: $8,000 to $20,000. Strategy, custom design, 15 to 30 pages, case study templates, CRM integration, lead capture architecture. B2B sites are content-heavy by nature, and the strategy work matters more here than in any other category.

Enterprise: $20,000 to $75,000+. Deep buyer-journey mapping, extensive content, marketing automation integration, custom tools or calculators, multi-stakeholder approval processes. The price reflects organizational complexity as much as technical work.

What drives the price up (and what does not)

Three things inflate web design costs more than anything else. First, content volume. Every additional page needs design consideration, copy, and QA. Fifty pages is not ten times five pages, it is a fundamentally bigger project. Second, custom functionality. A booking system with real-time availability is software development wearing a website costume. Third, revision cycles. Unclear requirements and endless feedback rounds burn hours fast. The cheapest way to control cost is knowing what you want before the project starts.

What does NOT justify big price jumps? Fancy animations. Most hurt conversion anyway. A blog you will never update. Ten stock photos of handshakes. And my personal pet peeve: “premium” page builders sold as custom development. Always ask what is actually custom about a custom quote.

Factors that drive web design pricing up

The hidden costs nobody puts in the quote

The build price is not the total price. Any honest web design cost calculator must include what happens after launch. Budget for these from day one.

Content creation. Copywriting, photography, video. Professional copy alone can run $1,500 to $5,000 for a full site. Phone photos of your real work beat stock photos, but someone still has to take and organize them.

Ongoing maintenance. Updates, backups, security monitoring, small changes. Expect $50 to $300 per month depending on platform and complexity. WordPress sites without maintenance plans are hacked sites waiting to happen. This is not optional.

Marketing. A website without traffic is a billboard in the desert. Budget for SEO, ads, or both from launch. The number of beautiful sites generating zero leads because nobody planned for traffic is staggering.

How to budget: a practical formula

Here is the budgeting rule I give every prospect. Take your expected annual revenue from the website’s leads, and budget 5 to 10 percent of year one for the build. A contractor expecting $200,000 in web-driven revenue should spend $10,000 to $20,000. That ratio keeps the investment proportional to the return.

If that math does not work, the problem is not the budget. It is the expectation. Either the revenue projection is fantasy, or the business is not ready for a serious web investment, and a simpler site plus marketing spend is the smarter play. An honest agency will tell you which one it is. We do.

Red flags in web design quotes

Quotes far below market with no explanation of scope. “Unlimited revisions” which means no process. No line items, just a single number. Pressure to sign this week. And the biggest: they cannot explain what makes their $15,000 site different from a $3,000 one in terms you understand. If they cannot articulate the value difference, there probably is not one.

On the flip side, do not automatically pick the cheapest quote. The most expensive website is the one you pay for twice: once for the cheap version, once for the rebuild. I have watched that movie hundreds of times. It never has a happy ending.

Getting an accurate quote: what to send agencies

Want quotes you can actually compare? Send every agency the same brief: your business type and goals, approximate page count, must-have functionality, examples of sites you like (and what you like about them), your timeline, and your budget range. Yes, share your budget range. Agencies that know your range give you realistic proposals. Agencies kept in the dark guess, and guesses waste everyone’s time.

We quote this way ourselves. Send us your brief and get a scoped quote within one business day, or browse our portfolio to see what different investment levels actually buy.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a small business website cost in 2026?

Most small business websites cost $2,000 to $8,000 for a professional build. Template-based sites run $1,500 to $5,000. Custom designs with copywriting and SEO foundations run $5,000 to $12,000. Add $50 to $300 per month for maintenance.

Why do web design quotes vary so much?

Because “a website” is not one product. Quotes differ on design approach (template vs custom), page count, functionality, copywriting, and SEO work. Two quotes of $2,000 and $20,000 can both be fair for completely different scopes. Always compare line items, not totals.

Is a $500 website worth it?

It depends on what you are buying. A $500 theme setup can work as a basic online presence if you know its limits. It will not convert like a strategic build, rank like an optimized site, or scale with your business. For businesses where the website drives revenue, it is usually a placeholder, not a solution.

What is the average cost of e-commerce website design?

Serious e-commerce builds run $8,000 to $25,000 for Shopify or WooCommerce with custom design and conversion optimization. Simple catalog setups cost $3,000 to $8,000. Custom or headless builds start around $25,000 and are only justified by significant existing revenue.

Should I share my budget with web design agencies?

Yes. Sharing your budget range gets you realistic proposals instead of guesses. Good agencies will tell you honestly what your budget buys and whether your expectations match. Agencies that refuse to discuss budget fit are ones to avoid.

How much should I budget for website maintenance?

Budget $50 to $300 per month for updates, backups, security monitoring, and minor changes. The exact figure depends on your platform and complexity. Skipping maintenance is the most expensive “saving” in web design, because recovery from a hack costs far more.
